The Eighth Academic Conference of WFCMS Specialty Committee of Translation Held in GMU

The Eighth Academic Conference of WFCMS Specialty Committee of Translation was held in Guangzhou Medical University (GMU) on November 11th. Sponsored by World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies(WFCMS) Specialty Committee of Translation and hosted by GMU, the conference attracted over 150 attendees from home and abroad to explore and exchange insights on the theme of international dissemination of Chinese medicine and foreign language teaching in Chinese medicine.




 
The opening ceremony was held in the Lecture Hall at Guangzhou Medical University’s Panyu Campus. Prof. Wang Xinhua, President of GMU, Deputy Director of WFCMS Specialty Committee of Translation , Director Zou Jianhua, Director Li Zhaoguo, Director Wang Hongbin and Director-General Wang Xiaopin each addressed the attendees.
President Wang Xinhua expressed a warm welcome to the distinguished guests who attended the conference. He gave a brief introduction of Guangzhou Medical University and the achievements attained by the development of the high-level university. He said that Guangzhou Medical University would play a vital role in passing on Chinese medicine and promoting internationalization of TCM as a comprehensive medical institution.In the meantime, he believed that the conference was instrumental in promoting internationalization of TCM, as well as the inheritance, dissemination and development of Chinese traditional culture.
On the behalf of WFCMS, Director Zou Jianhua extended a cordial welcome to the attendees from home and abroad. She elaborated on the function and academic significance of WFCMS, highlighting its leading role in international collaboration and exchange in Chinese medicine. She also gave her valuable suggestions to the Specialty Committee of Translation in order to further the international academic exchange of TCM and to improve the standardization and specialization in the translation process.
 
Director Li Zhaoguo compared the images of translating pioneers in TCM at Guangzhou to a “flying dragon” and “dancing phoenix”. He pointed out that Guangzhou was the first city to promote translation of TCM, providing an important platform for international exchange in the field. He was impressed with the development of Guangzhou Medical University and  expressed his gratitude to GMU for hosting the conference which helps showcase the integration of western and Chinese medicine in the field of translation, reflecting on the contribution of western medicine to Chinese medicine.
Director Wang Hongbin acknowledged the contribution of the Specialty Committee of Translation in the promotion of international academic exchange in  translation of Chinese medicine. Guangdong was the frontier for the dissemination of Chinese medicine to the world in line with the “Belt and Road” Initiative; while Guangzhou was spearheading the development of TCM in Guangdong Province. As Guangzhou Medical University features the discipline of Integrated Western and Chinese Medicine and talents, he urged GMU to take it as the opportunity to improve the development of this discipline in order to promote the internationalization of the education, and in turn  building a solid foundation for further development of the University.
 
Director General Wang Xiaopin said that General Secretary Xi Jinping clearly pointed out in his 19th NPC report that we should stick to the principle of combining traditional Chinese and Western medicine while inheriting and developing TCM. The Central Government will put its full support in the development of TCM. It made clear that Chinese medicine was a national strategy as well as an important medium to promote understanding among countries.Translation of TCM is a prerequisite for the overseas dissemination of Chinese medicine; only by expanding TCM translation teams and improving translation skills can the global campaign of TCM be effective.  In this spirit, WFCMS Specialty Committee of Translation plays an important role.
 
Following the opening ceremony, nine domestic and international experts gave a keynote speech in the lecture hall.
 After the plenary session, participants made presentations and exchanges in three parallel sessions titled: "Translation • Language • Culture", "Terminology Research" and "Teaching and Learning Research"
Professor Zou Jianhua presided over the closing ceremony, in which academic groups from all parallel sessions delivered their reports. Prizes for outstanding papers and winners of the First International Contest for TCM Translation were presented respectively. Director Li Zhaokuo delivered a closing speech, successfully concluding the conference.
